Another Friday

It’s Friday again already! How did that happen? My son remarked earlier today that it’s been a weird week for us. And so it has. We started out with him sick (sore throat, all better now), then I got sick (food poisoning, also all better now, but there were moments when the alternative was pretty attractive), a bunch of odd little goofs, and today our heat has gone out. Nothing major, obviously, just bumps in the road, but it’s been a whole week of them. It might get a little chilly here this weekend. I fiddled with the heater too late to try to get someone out to fix it, today, so I’ll wait until Monday to call. no worries. We have quilts.

I did get some sewing in, though (mostly because I stayed off of Facebook and avoided the news). I finished up backs for four quilts, all of which you’ve seen before, and popped them in a box to go off to the quilter. Making a back is probably my least favorite thing. Yes, I know it’s not hard. And yes, if I’d clean off my sewing table, it would be even easier. But no. I leave junk piled on the edge of the table which then gets knocked in the floor.¬†Then I pick it up and put it away. Or move it somewhere else, to be put away later. Not the most efficient method, I know, but it works. Sort of.

I’ve also been sewing some simple things. I’ve wanted to doing some easy piecing with lots of color that I can plow through quickly. There have been several new designs floating around in my head, and I just needed a break from them. So, I’m making a houndstooth quilt for my son. I’ve really really enjoyed sewing with an ombre. (This is Moda Marble Dots.) I’ve had to think a little bit about what to place where, mostly because I didn’t think before I started, but I think it’s going to be pretty cool. The background is Basic Grey, but I can’t remember the print name. I’ve had it for quite a while and finally decided I wanted to do something quick and easy with it. Here is that quilt in progress:

Simple houndstooth
Pretty, huh?

I am also plowing through a huge stack of charm packs. Yes, charm packs! I know, I know, I never buy precuts. But I did. These are ¬†from Moda: “Fancy” by Lily Ashbury. I mixed them with a Kona solid for something quick and bright and mindless. I must have been wanting spring to come. Well, yeah, and…color! I’m just making tons of half-square triangles of these, it’s kind of a “I-want-to-sew-but-don’t-want-to-think-about-it” project. I may set them like this, may not. Who knows? Either way, I’ll get a quilt big enough for my bed so that will make me happy. Wait’ll you see which print I chose for the back! I’ll post a pic in a day or two. But trust me, it’s loud!

I’ve finally started listening to books on Audible, by the way. Last week I listened to C.S. Lewis’ The Screwtape Letters. I had read it eons ago, but was delighted at the depth the narrator brought to it. Well worth a listen! I also listened to The Girl on the Train. Odd book. Fascinating, but odd.

This week, I started listening to Jan Karon’s Mitford series. People had raved about those books for years, but somehow I just hadn’t gotten around to reading them. Well. Audible has changed all that. I wonder if, from now on, this quilt will remind me of Miss Sadie and Dooley? Barnabus?

Until now, I always listened to music (usually classic rock, but sometimes bluegrass, classical, or jazz) or watched reruns of old TV shows on Netflix (The Dick Van Dyke Show, among others). Somehow, though, listening to books makes me feel a bit more…virtuous. Like I’m really getting more done. Yes, I know, the Mitford books are fiction, they’re fluff, but still. Let me have my little fantasy, OK?

There are several more projects (and books) in my queue, and still more backs to piece. (I swear I wonder why I don’t just buy wide backs to start with?), but I’m plugging along. I have a couple of new fabric packs which I’ll show you soon. I need to think on them some more before I commit to doing anything. But here’s a hint:

Just a hint

Do you listen to anything when you’re working? What have you been sewing?

The Cowgirl Club

My goodies are here!

My pal Shelly, at Prairie Moon Quilts, has this fun little thing going called The Cowgirl Club. You can read all about it here. Basically, she puts together a fun packet of cowgirl (or maybe cowboy) themed stuff for us every so often (about once a quarter, I think) and puts it up for sale on Etsy.

I already have a pretty extensive collection of cowboy (and girl) fabrics, so when she announced this, I was excited! Then, when the packet was available, I couldn’t wait to order. And…here’s what I got:

Cowgirl Club goodies!
Cowgirl Club goodies!!

I don’t want to give it all away, but there is fabric, more fabric, some buttons, charms, and even more! I even waited several days to share this with you all, so I wouldn’t spoil the surprise for somebody else (and believe me, that was HARD!!). Since I got the package, I’ve been scheming what I want to do with it. There are so many possibilities. I’m thinking I’ll mix it with some of my other stuff…and maybe even add in more of what Shelly offers in the next rounds.

I’ll keep you posted what I do with these goodies, but in the meantime, you’d better hop over and order yours before they’re all gone!
