Quick Catch-up — January 2018 — What I’m up to

Hey there! I know a lot of you have wondered what I’ve been up to, so I thought I’d drop in and give you a quick update.

As you may have noticed, I have been absent from social media. I will tell you, right off the bat, that things are fine. I just kind of got busy a while back and then realized how much more I could actually get done by avoiding the temptation of chatting with folks on Facebook or spending hours looking at Instagram. Hard to believe, right? I do miss the visits but the inevitable rabbit holes I fall down are such a big hazard.

Lately our internet has been painfully um…intermittent. That cramps doing much too. As you probably know, we live a little ways out of town and our choices are few anyway, and I suspect our router might be failing too. Sigh. So forgive any typos or format errors–I’m typing this on my phone. Yes, ALL of it.

No, I haven’t made any quilts since “Atonement.” (And, although I was pretty sure it would get in, it wasn’t accepted into Quiltcon. Go figure. Oh well!) I did cut part of the right side off and replaced the binding with solid black. I am also happy that it now hangs flatter. It’s the little things, you know?

I have knitted a few things: a scarf for one of my favorite baristas as he left for a semester in France; a simple hat which I love; a positively delicious small shawl (that I wear as a scarf)–it’s Malabrigo so you know why I think its yummy, right? and I’m currently working on a fun drop-stitch scarf. I’m including photos below but if you want to know a bit more about my knitting, I am butLori on Ravelry.

Over Christmas, I kept things low-key and did not do any major baking or cleaning (tragic, isn’t it?), tons of decorating, or even buy masses of gifts. I kept it simple. And you know what? Our holidays were just great. Relaxing. Good. How about that?

I am still walking  (IF it’s above 20 degrees F at 7:00 a.m.), and finished 2017 down 30 pounds. With January’s nutty weather, I’ve really missed getting out every morning. I’m even still low-carbing.  I’d like to drop a few more pounds this year, but as long as it’s too cold to walk, that’s not going to happen soon. Yes, lots of people tell me that you burn more calories walking in the cold, but I can’t walk quickly enough when it’s freezing!

Speaking of nutty weather, it is bitter here this morning. It was -5 when I got up. The forecast high is a whole 13 degrees. Ahem. Yep, that’s cold. I am putting some venison chili in the crockpot this morning…it’ll be hard to wait until suppertime! You can maybe see in the photo above that there has been virtually no traffic on our road. It’s not easy going! In the back, only the deer have walked through.

Yesterday, I headed out in a snowstorm to Nevada, Missouri, to teach “Gathering Up the Fragments.” I did have a “what was I thinking?” moment when I realized I had to drive feeling for the rumble strip because I couldn’t see the road. Not only was it still snowing, but it was foggy and blowing. Fortunately that didn’t last long and I made it there and back just fine. In fact, it was an excellent day! If you missed the photos on Facebook, pop over to the workshops page to see what we were doing. My students hit it out of the park! This class is up again next month. It’s SUCH fun!

Probably the biggest project I’ve undertaken lately, though, is mucking out and reorganizing my office. This has needed to happen for way too long. I don’t have any before photos so you’ll just have to believe me. It was pretty bad. I am not done yet because I am replacing furniture with more efficient storage and going through every single piece of paper, one by one, shredding bags and bags of stuff. I am also weeding through all of the books and moving out a lot of them. It’s taking a lot of time but I feel so much better.  It’s kind of a practice session for what I am planning in my workroom. I did the same thing in my clothes closet too. My kitchen cabinets are candidates for the same treatment. Yay!!

I haven’t read a lot lately, no finishes at all this year even though I set myself a goal of 52 books. I did manage to finish the 48 on last year’s agenda. I keep track of my reads on Goodreads but it can be a minefield if I start reading reviews. For now, though, I am listening to 17 Carnations, and reading Dreamers and Deceivers.

So now you know. I have NOT dropped off the face of the Earth. I’m here. Quiet, cold, but here. Digging through all the piles of stuff.

What have YOU been up to? Drop me a line in the comments!

I really was wondering what had happened to you. You KNOW it’s noticeable when even the Cowboy asks about you! Glad you’re doing all right, and having a good winter. Winter is a great time for knitting. Thanks for the update. Now I can stop worrying.

I was THRILLED to see your post and happy to know all is well. I am equally impressed that you did this whole post on your phone! I can barely make and take a call on mine … sad, but true. I’m so TechNOOOO. FYI – finished #3 in the new series 🙂 #4 is on the wall. #1 has shipped off last week for (UGH) FOUR!!! years – sad and happy. In the meantime, trying to stay warm is a full time job. TTYS
