Creativity Challenge — Four Ways

This past week’s challenge in the Year of Cultivating Creativity challenge was a tough one. Our task was to pick a word and illustrate it four different ways. If it sounds easy, you’re not thinking very hard! Or maybe you’re smarter than I am, because I had to think a long time about it. But, I did finally settle on a word: Fire.

No, I’m not a budding pyromaniac, honest. But fire seemed a good word. It represents a lot of different things besides just the physical thing. I am kind of fascinated by fire in real life, but I also know to respect it.

When I was in college, a long, long time ago, I had been at some boy’s house with a girlfriend for an evening. Not long after we got back to our dorm, somebody called and said the boy’s house was on fire. Since I had left my car near it, we took off running down the street. Bear in mind that the house was an old wood-frame construction, but I had never seen anything like the way it seemed to be completely gone in one big whoosh. Everybody in the house was fine but I have never forgotten that night.

Now, I must tell you that I ran out of time and only got three parts of the four done. I have an idea for the fourth that I think will be really cool if I will just make time to focus on it.

The first version was a photo I took with my phone, and applied a filter. Kinda cool, huh?

Four

The second iteration of flame ended up in my small sketchbook, with lots of Sharpie ink:

Of course you know I couldn’t let it go without trying something with fabric, right? And there is this little obsession I have lately with improving my free-motion quilting…

Four

But not content with that one, I tried again:

Four

I am not really happy with the quilting on either of these, but it was a good exercise nonetheless. You can tell in the photos that I was not interested in trying to get my tension right. I was trying to get stitch lengths to be somewhat uniform, but that’s a challenge for another day…

This week’s task is going to be really fun, it’s all about crayons! It’s a good thing that it will be pretty quick and easy because I have a super busy week coming up, but I’m looking forward to some fun things! Hope you are too!

See you next time!

  • Wendy Tuma

I really like what you did! Very creative.

    • Lori East

Thank you, Wendy! I enjoyed doing them. If the truth be told, I could probably fall down a rabbit hole focusing on one word like that…

      • Wendy Tuma

Well, if you’re going down the rabbit hole, don’t forget your crayons 😀 Just think of the possibilities!!

        • Lori East

Right? I might be more likely to take my camera…and some Sharpies!

  • shelly

I like those! They’re all great! I’m still working on my trees.

    • Lori East

Thanks, Shelly! I am looking forward to more of your trees. That is another word that has TONS of possibilities!
